I'm baaack!!

I am back from my much needed mini-vacation. Hubby and I went to visit my Aunt Rita over the Thanksgiving weekend. It was so relaxing, we pretty much acted like bums most of the time. Here is how our trip went.

We left on Wednesday about 10:30-11:00am for Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. We arrived there about 6:00pm and dinner was waiting for us when we arrived. We had pork chops, BBQ shrimp and rice with vegetables. Yummy!! Of course we stayed up late talking and catching up on some things going on in our lives.

On Thanksgiving, my aunt and uncle fixed a full breakfast consisting of bacon, eggs, biscuits and hash browns. (She loves me:)) then we relaxed for a while until it was time to go out for our Thanksgiving Feast. And that is definitely what it was, a feast, well actually a buffet.

We, Aunt Rita, Uncle Curtis, Cousin Jess, Hubby and I, went to a restaurant, on 7th floor (top) of a Holiday Inn. The restaurant was awesome, all the outside walls were glass and the side we were on overlooked the Potomac River and Georgetown. The view was really cool. The meal was yummy, it consisted of Shrimp Bisque, tossed salad with all the fixin's, green beans almondine, lima beans and various corn mix, mashed potatoes/gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, roast pork (in a wonderful sauce), boneless chicken breasts in a berry sauce, turkey, ham, sausage stuffing, oyster stuffing and like 10 different desserts. I am not a dessert fan, so I skipped that, besides, I was stuffed to the gills.

After dinner we all went back to my aunt and uncles for pecan pie, chocolate pecan pie, chocolate cake (like there was not enough desserts at the feast) and drinks. Here is where my margaritas started. BTW, pecan pie goes really well with margaritas:) Then cousin Jess's Hubby, Jason, came over and my aunt and I played cards (Hand and Foot) with them. Yep, Jess and I lost. We think they cheated though.

On Friday, Hubby and I got up and went to the Air and Space Museum out by Dulles Airport then out for lunch at a Pizza/Pasta place. Trust me, it was nothing to write home about. I can't even remember the name of the place. Then Friday night we had Honey Baked ham, homemade mac and cheese and corn casserole and left over deep fried turkey from my uncles families' dinner, and of course more margaritas:)

Saturday we all got up and went to this amazing restaurant in Old Alexandria, Va called Royal. On Saturday and Sunday's they have an omelet bar and breakfast buffet. I have never been to such a place. You get in line and this one guy makes all the omelets, you just tell him what you want in it. You have the choice of ham, spinach, tomatoes, onions, green and jalapeno peppers, mushrooms, cheddar, swiss and feta cheeses and as much or as little as you like. Then you can get a waffle, and all the breakfast buffet stuff. Needless to say, I was stuffed to the gills once again.

After breakfast we all when to the Smithsonian American History Museum in DC. I am not much of a history buff, but it was interesting and HUGE! I bet we were in there for 2-3 hours. Hopefully we walked off our breakfast. :) For dinner we had leftovers from Saturday night and once again stuffed to the gills.

In between all the eating and visiting the museums, we watched some really good movies. I bet I watched more movies of those 4 days than I have watched in 6 months. But, it was oh sooooo relaxing. I went to bed when "I" wanted and got up when "I" wanted, took a shower on "my" time, and napped whenever "I" wanted.

I am so thankful that Hubby wanted to get away this year and I am also thankful that my Aunt Rita and Uncle Curtis has a huge house and loves company:) I am all rejuvenated and ready to go again for a while, thanks goodness!

Thanks Jr and Aunt Rita and Uncle Curtis!! Love Ya!!

Wonderful News About Lexi!!

I just checked in on Lexi's Caring Bridge Journal as here is what was there:

Monday, November 23, 2009 11:22 PM, EST

Hello! I have more wonderful news. Alexis's bone marrow aspiration results showed that the bone marrow was negative for any signs of cancer! ALexis still has one more round of chemo, but so far all other rounds appear to be doing exactly what they are suppose to!! Words can't expressed how overjoyed we are.

Alexis is still in the hospital. Today the nurses removed the tube in her nose. She has not been doing to well eating, but at dinner she finally convinced the nurses to let her have soft foods. She ate just a little but that is better than nothing. If all goes well and I can keep her eating and drinking, I should be able to take her home tomorrow.

Last night I got to take Aaron home and spend some time with him. We had fun playing and reading books. He gets to spend the night with Grandma and Grandpa Howard and does not seem to be bothered by that one bit. Over the weekend, he spent two nights with Grandma and Grandpa Bess per his request and had fun going with them to Uncle Jason and Aunt Jess's OSU/Michigan party. Of course he was the life of the party. It is hard to imagine that up to 3 years old he would barely look at family and friends he did not know well, let alone talk to them!

I am staying at Hotel Children's again and hope there are fewer interruptions tonight than the last time I stayed.

Good Night.

Love,
Jen

Wow, this is super good news to her and her family. My heart is filled with joy for them all! Don't forget you can all hop over and leave words of encouragement or congrats on her Caring Bridge Journal. You do have to sign up with your name and email address but that's it. I know they would love to hear from you all.

Another WTF??

I just don't get it. I can't understand why people are the way they are, nor can I understand what goes through peoples brains, except for maybe some crack or along that line. I am a follower of DreamCatchers For Abused Children and some of the things that I read on there, makes me want the Government to do the Eye for an Eye as punishment, more and more. Well, personally I am a firm believer that if you abuse a child you should have the punishment that you put that child through plus if you're a male you should be castrated and if you are a female you should have to have a hysterectomy and have your hoo-hoo sewn shut. I can not comprehend the reasoning for such terrible crimes.

As a Certified Childcare Provider, I am tired of trash like this giving us bad names. Our job is to care for and love those children and to teach them some of the things that they need to survive in today's world. We are not there to damage them in any way, shape or form. I wish that sometimes we could find good things about us Childcare Providers in the news, but no! it's always negative things. How often do you actually see that happening. It's a good thing that there are people out their who are smart enough to realize that not all childcare providers are trash like this woman.

I read this today on their site and it came from The Weekly Vice.

Anna Roddy - Daycare Worker - Arrested After Sexually Abusing Baby With Foreign Object - Caused Deep Tear To Baby’s Vagina

Muskego, WI (The Weekly Vice) - Anna Roddy, a 21-year-old Wisconsin daycare worker was arrested after she allegedly attacked an 11-month-old baby, causing a deep tear to the little girl's vaginal area.

According to Muskego police, the baby was the first child dropped off at
St Paul's School of Early Learning on Thursday. When the baby's mother picked her up, a daycare worker informed her that her daughter had "a rough afternoon."

A short later, the child's father discovered a horrific sight while changing the child's diaper. A "deep internal tear" to the child's vaginal area, according to court documents.

Investigators say the baby required surgery for her injury - and that the injury was caused by a foreign object.

Meanwhile, Roddy reportedly admitted to causing injury to the child and not reporting it. A second worker at the daycare is also under investigation in the incident. Both employees have been placed on unpaid leave.

Tell Me Something I Don't Already Know!!

So, a kid, or I guess he is no longer a kid he is now an adult, that I used to do daycare for sent me a request to take a Mental Disorder Quiz via Facebook. Well, silly me took the darn thing and I was hoping that it would tell me something new and the darn thing didn't. This is what it told me:

You are Depressed
You have one of the most common problems in the world today. You just know how to be happy. Whether there is a reason or not, you tend to be full of sadness most of the time. You tend to be sluggish and laid back because you don’t have the motivation to do anything. Here is a tip for you, CHEER UP. The world is not as bad as you think so just try to appreciate the little things.

That is not a way to try to CHEER UP! The Mental Disorder Quiz, it not my friend. Or, maybe it is one of my dearest friends because it is being honest with me. lol Now, that cheered me up. ;o)

Sunday Stealing: Did I Say That?

Today we ripped this meme off a blogger named Sarah at the blog Lady Mama. She states that Party Mummy (she did not provide a link) insisted she do the meme. Lexi Update after surgery!

Here is the update that Lexi's mom left for everyone on their Caring Bridge Journal:

Friday, November 20, 2009 9:58 AM, EST

Thank you so much to everyone who has wished us a successful surgery. We truly appreciate all of the texts, calls and messages on our site. It makes us feel overjoyed to know we have so many supporters.

It also breaks up the days of waiting patiently for a successful recovery. I actually look forward to reading my guestbook to see who has written!

Anyway, back to the news everyone wants to know. Alexis had a fairly good night last night in the PICU. Because the surgery went so well she could have stayed on a regular floor last night but the surgeons wanted to lean on the safe side. When she first came back from surgery her pain was extremely bad but tolerable enough to talk a little. She was being very carefel not to move since she had a lot of pain in her belly. She was on a morphine drip that gives her additional medicine every 6 minutes if she pushes the button. The tough thing for her was keeping up with the medicine. We couldn't get her to click the button unless we would tell her to hit it as she drifted in and out of sleep. She slept fairly well. Around 3 am I woke up and stayed awake for a while so I could get her caught back up with some additional medicine. Then when the doctor's started coming in at 6 am I would have her hit the button to give an extra boost. Around 8 am Alexis woke me up in utter pain. She was so miserable she did not want to talk at all. She just wanted me to get daddy who was in the parent accomodations room that they have for PICU parents. It actually has a full size bed in it! We then started working on getting more pain medicine in her. When I went to take my shower the pain doctor came in and decided to increase the basal dose of medicine as well as the extra dosage when she hits her button. This time though it only gives her more medicine every 12 minutes since it is a higher dosage. The surgeon also came in and said that Alexis's numbers look great! She will definitely be changing rooms today-where I am not sure. But if you sent an ecard using the childrens hospital site don't worry about it, it will still get to her. She will also have the catheter taken out. The goal for the next few days will be getting her up and walking around so her lungs will expand to prevent pnemonia. If she can't get up because of he pain, there are a few other options for her like blowing bubbles. I guess we will just have to see how she feels. We are not allowed to use our cell phones in the PICU but once we switch rooms we will be able to again. Hopefully this will be out last room switch, since this will be the 3rd room we have been in since Wednesday!

Well we will continue to keep you posted. '

Oh, I almost forgot. The other day when I was talking about how busy of a week we have had, I forgot to include a very exciting part of our week. On Tuesday, I took Alexis to her classroom for the first time! I will type more in a few minutes.

She has not updated it since, but I have talked to her and they have given her some magnesium and put her on oxygen because of her oxygen levels going down while she is sleeping. Jen was not sure why they were giving her magnesium but they are supposed to answer that question for her today. She also said that Lexi is not really talking to anyone much because of the pain she is in. She is the type that when she gets mad or upset or something along that line, she is mad at the world and doesn't talk to anyone unless she has to.

Feel free to hop over to her Caring Bridge site and read about her and leave them a word of encouragement.

Lexi is out of Surgery!

Lexi's mom posted this on their Caring Bridge Journal:

Thursday, November 19, 2009 4:18 PM, EST

We just spoke to the surgeon. The surgery went very well. They were able to remove all of the tumor and all of the diseased lymph nodes that the surgeon could see and feel. There was no need to remove her kidney, she lost very little blood and did not require any more blood. The surgeon said that she removed all of the diseased tissue around the kidney and that the other organs around it look very good. The surgeon wants her to stay in PICU overnight just in case. Then she will move to another floor tomorrow. Thankfully, they were able to go through the same place as last time. They just had to make the incision a little larger. Thank you to everyone for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Jen

Lexi update!! Surgery today! (UPDATED X2)

Here is an update from Lexi's mom on her Caring Bridge site. Please do stop over and send her well wishes!! You can also send Lexi a card by visiting The Nationwide Childrens Hospital website. Scot and Jen would love for Lexi to receive some cards today. This is a bit of a journal entry from Jen, about the cards:

Nationwide Children's hospital offers a terrific greeting card program where anyone can go to Children's website and create a greeting card. The hospital staff will then print off the cards and deliver them to the patients room. If anyone is interested in doing this when Lexi has her surgery here is the link to use. I also put it on the first page under "My story" The link to use is:

Hello there! Boy have we had a busy week. I can definitley say no one is ever bored at our house! On Tuesday evening, the make a wish volunteers came to our house to start the paperwork for granting Alexis's wish. Alexis's wish is to go to Walt Disney World. For about 3 years now Alexis has been asking when we are going and we have always said when Aaron is around 5. When it came time to choose her wish there was no question. She also said she wants to fly in an airplane and see/swim with the dolphins. She was excited to know that those things can still happen if she goes to Walt Disney World. Aaron is also very excited about going! When the volunteers came to the house one volunteer completed the paperwork with Scot and I while the other volunteer played with Aaron and Alexis with the gifts they brought them. Of course our "little ham" Aaron was not shy at all. He was hugging both volunteers and talking their ears off. He thought the ramp the volunteer Mary made for his new airplanes was cool. Alexis had fun too! She dragged her Ker plunk game out and the three of them played the game together. Alexis's wish will take a little while to plan so we would go on the trip most likely between May-August.

Over the weekend, I received a letter in the mail from our insurance company stating that the surgeon scheduled to complete Alexis's surgery is not in network. Of course this concerned me a bit. After all, I have never received a letter like this before and did not really know what to do about it. I want to thank my friend Linda for suggesting that I call the surgery unit to find out what they were doing about it before I called other people. Th
is was the best thing to do because they told me to do nothing and that if for some reason my insurance agency did not cover the surgeon the hospital would make up the difference. This surgeon just started in September and her name is not on all of the approved lists yet. This was a great relief. Our final notices for Alexis's bills have been coming in but our oncology patient accounts advocate and BCMH has arranged for us to put our payments on hold until BCMH kicks in. I have had to make many phone calls to ensure that each seperate department has placed our bills on hold so they do not send us to collections. BCMH is 16-20 weeks out from application date. BCMH is a state funded agency that will pay what our insurance company won't pay for the first 3 months of diagnosis. Only certain diagnoses falls under this, however Alexis's diagnosis has already been approved. We are very thankful for this program, they should cover everything Alexis had through October 28th. My car is being fixed from the deer that hit me last week.

Today my in-laws took me and the kids to drop off the rental car and then drove us to Children's for Alexis to be admitted to the hospital for her bowel prep before surgery tomorrow.

When we arrived to the hospital I mentioned that Alexis had a runny nose and has been sneezing. At that point no one was concerned. When the surgeon came and I told her Alexis's symptoms she said that she was told it was just allergies. However, Alexis has had a runny nose on and off all day. At this point the surgeon became concerned and ordered a viral test, where the nurse had to swab the back of her nose twice. The surgeon stated that if she has a viral infection they will post pone the surgery for at least a week to prevent the chance of her having pnemonia. Unfortunantly, the test was not sent to the lab until 4:20pm. 4 pm is the cutoff for the lab. So now we have to wait until tomorrow to find out if the surgery is a go. The bad thing is that Alexis had to complete her bowel prep which includes a tube down her nose, diarrhea and a clear liquid diet. Please keep us in your thoughts and hope that all of this is for not. Even though the nurses in this unit have had to be a lot more invasive to Alexis she has been extremely brave. Several nurses have told her that she has done the best that they have ever seen with the treatments. Alexis also had to have blood taken out of a vein instead of her tubies. The lab work showed that Alexis's clotting ability is lower than it should be and the surgeon was afraid that the heparin diluted the labs. Thus, she ordered blood work taken from a vein. The surgery unit has definitely been the most invasive to Alexis but if they can keep her from having pnemonia or any other complications it will all be worth it. If the third labs show that Alexis's clotting ability is still low then the surgeon will give her medicine and more blood (she had to receive a blood transfusion today) to ensure there are no complications. The surgeon also told us that the tumor is currently about 3cm in diameter and that she feels she should be able to remove all of the tumor without having to remove one of her kidneys. However, if there are any unforseen cicumstances then she may need to remove one of her kidneys. I am so very proud of Alexis for being so brave and strong. It is amazing to watch her. When she has to have something done that she doesn't want she will ask a zillion questions about exactly what to expect, grab my hand, take a deep breath, insist that the nurses wait till she is ready and then is as cooperative than most adults can be.

Well, I know I wrote a lot of details but if I ever decide to write a book someday I will have all most of the details waiting for me.
Thank you again for everyone's love and support. Oh, I almost forgot, someone called our room tonight when I was out and talked to Scot. We wanted to thank you for wishing us the best with Alexis's surgery but unfortunantly Scot did not catch your name. Anyway, thank you for thinking of us, we appreciate it.

Surgery is scheduled for noon tomorrow, however if the surgeon can get a room earlier that is what she prefers. So, I am not sure when it will be, but will keep everyone posted if I can. Aaron is staying with Grandma and Grandpa Howard tomorrow and my parents are coming to the hospital to be here for the surgery.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow.

Love, Jen

UPDATE

Thursday, November 19, 2009 11:31 AM, EST

Hello to all our Wellwishers
, This is Mary , Jennifers Mom. Well all the tests for the viral infection came back negative. They also did a chest x-ray just to be on the safe side and it looked good. They just came about 20 minutes ago to take Alexis down to prep her for surgery. The surgery is scheduled to start at 12:30. It should take about 2-3 hours. Jennifer and Scot will stay with her until they take her in. Alexis is being very brave. When they came in to get her she had to go to the bathroom, so they left and waited in the hall. When they came back the second time she said she had a belly ache. A little case of nerves I'm sure.
So now we wait. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. We couldn't get through this with out your support. We'll keep you posted.

Love , Mary

Hi Everyone! I just spoke to Dr. Aldrink's nurse and they are all prepped for the main surgery and are getting ready to start. I did not realize it until today but Alexis was also scheduled for a bone marrow aspiration prior to the main surgery. Dr. Kerlin one of the oncologists came out about 30 minutes ago and said that the bone marrow aspiration went well. He said that it was cute because when they first brought her back for surgery she was upset but then after the anethesiolo

gist calmed her down Alexis pushed her own medicine into her tubey that put her to sleep. That is our miss independent Alexis! Just an FYI- the surgeon did change her mind and stated that the surgery could take 3-4 hours, but that they will keep us updated throughout the surgery.

Thank you for the continued positive thoughts and prayers.

*Wasp Spray* For Your Safety

I got this in my email today and thought that you all should see it.

You may have seen this before but it is worth repeating.

*Wasp Spray*

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was
concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them
when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police
department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she
get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is
a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get
too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily
blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.

She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention
from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby
at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be
of use.

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in
Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview
High School. For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and
hornet spray near your door or bed. Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray.

The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says "spray the culprit in the eyes".

It's a tip he's given to students for decades.

It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray. "That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out." Maybe even save a life.

Please share this with all the people in your life.
