There are certain things that can set me off and getting my schedule changed constantly is one of them. I know that I do provide home daycare and that I have to be a bit flexible but come on now, really? To refresh what I am talking about, here is part of my B*tch and Moan post from last Friday:
Second off, I have come to the conclusion that one of my daycare parents' place of employment must be trying to get them to quit their job because every week there is a schedule change of some sort. I like to run on a schedule of sorts. Because I have so many kiddos and work so many hours, I need a schedule of some sort. I need to know who is coming and who is going and on what days. Well, at least I try to know who is coming and who is going and when. It has changed from working 24 hours 3 days per week to working everyday and not knowing what time they work the next day until about 6pm the night before. Then it has changed to 16 hours days 3 days per week now it's 14 hour days 2 days and an 8 hour day the third day. Now guess what, times are changing for the 8 hour day, which happens to be Saturday. Don't mess with my Saturdays!
Well, can you guess what happened today? Yep, you are right another schedule change. Another flippin change in my time to myself. I finally get every other Saturday night off, yea for me, and now a schedule change. Do I have "SUCKER" written on my forehead? Do I walk around saying please take advantage of me? Do I tell everyone that I am open for business 24/7? NO! NO! and NO!
I do believe this is the fourth time this month that their schedule has been changed.
Last week it was supposed to be:
Tues 3:30am to 10:00pm
Thurs 3:30am to 10:00pm
Sat 3:30am to 2:00pm
Then it changed to 4:00pm on Saturday.
Now their schedule is:
Tues 5:30am to 8:00pm
Thurs 5:30am to 8:00pm
Sat 2:45am to 9:00pm
WHF? I wanted to be able to do something this Saturday night. I know, I did something last Saturday night but it was after 9:00pm and the band didn't start until 8:30pm. I really would like to have some sort of a life. Everytime things get situated so that I can "maybe" have some time to myself, things get screwed up.
I was expecting to have all my kids gone by 4pm and one mom of 2 says "Will you watch my boys if I work the morning shift?" I said sure, thinking it's the morning shift, it will be okay because I have kiddos till 4pm anyway. Well, boy was I wrong! Did you know that the morning shift doesn't start until 11am and doesn't get done until 6pm, meaning kids won't get picked up until 7pm. Now this other parent wants to go and stretch it out until 9pm, and it's on my evening off. That I just got and haven't even had the chance to enjoy.
Gee, I wonder why I get so depressed!! I know, this is my business and you are probably saying to yourself that I could just tell them "NO!" Well I got so mad tonight that I told the parent with the scheduling issues to tell her boss that now he has gone and p*ssed me off. I also told her that I couldn't give her an answer as to whether I would watch them till 9pm because I was too mad to make a wise decision. I swear I am just going to go over to the tattoo shop and get this tattooed on my forehead:

Who knows, maybe I just need a nice long weekend to regenerate my energy. Maybe I need some off with out if being spent going grocery shopping and cleaning house. Maybe I need some happy drugs. Maybe I need to win the lottery. Maybe I need...well...maybe I need a lot of things.
darling, time they find family, grand parnets, the father of the kids, aunts, or something....but stop the insanity.
ReplyDeletepost hours ie. 6 am to 6 pm mon - fri. reg pay
before 6 am or after 6 pm mon - fri and you will pay $## per hour
and weekends are $## per hour
and I would have these at good good wages.
Oh yes, I believe you should write up some rules for these people. Just as school is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. i.e. are they going to say sorry I had to work overtime? If they have overtime or a weird schedule they need to make other arrangements to have a relative fill in for them to keep proper timing if not you get time & a half just as they would if they had to work OT. Dang girl, don't beat yourself up over this. You need to lay down the law!
ReplyDeleteTammy TELL her NO WAY TO SATURDAY and you can't do it!! They need to realize that there is a line you have to draw and your not there to be walked over. I know that it's difficult but it looks like the hours got cut drastically and someone can't change the hours like that without the person excepting it! So The mom needs to put their foot down. When you have children people know that sometimes you just can't Do it!
ReplyDeleteGOOD Luck
I ran an in home daycare for over ten years. It was hard. And I know exactly what you are talking about. I dealt with this situation time and time again. Unfortunately, it just keep happening until you demand what you need. And I eventually decided that I needed some time to myself. And I put my foot down about it. People learned to respect that - most of the time - and did not even ask about those times.
ReplyDeleteBut I know how hard it is to say no. I know how hard it is to put your foot down. I really do and I totally empathize. I say say no to working that late on Saturday - most of the time if you do the parent works it out with their boss.
You definitely need time for yourself and your family/friends. I would take some of the previous suggestions to heart. Set work hours for your home business and if you feel comfortable working outside the hours, on an occasional favor, set a higher fee. These people may think they have no one else, but there are plenty of people to help outside the 8 hours you've already watched their child. Hope things get better for you!
