New Mammogram Guidelines

American Cancer Society Responds to Changes to USPSTF Mammography Guidelines
The American Cancer Society guidelines will not change; annual mammography recommended for women 40 and over
Atlanta 2009/11/16 -November 16, 2009—The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) today announced that it is changing its guidelines for mammography and no longer recommends routine screening for women between the ages of 40 and 49. Below is a statement from Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer, American Cancer Society. “The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider. When recommendations are based on judgments about the balance of risks and benefits, reasonable experts can look at the same data and reach different conclusions. READ MORE HERE.
I got this information from American Cancer Society.

What the hell are they thinking? I was so ticked off when I heard this. This is just absolutely ridiculous! I read a stat that says that 1 in 69 women in their 40's will have breast cancer. What the hell are they thinking. Regardless of their STUPID new guidelines I will be having my mammogram, and having it yearly! I will also make sure that my daughter gets them also before the age of 50. And then after you wait until you are 50 they want you to have them every 2 years. GGGrrrr! How long do you think this is going to last?

  1. and besides all of that, the insurance companies will stop paying for mammos according to those guidelines. So if you can not pay for your own you will not get one! Susan G Komens site has a petition you can sign against these new guidelines. I don't know how to make a link on a comment sorry, but you can copy and paste it into your browser.
